yudhishthir asked Sri krishna...: Hey Madhusudan ..! what is the ekadashi in the sharavan month's
Shukla paksha...please elaborate.


Lord Krishna said..Hey king, in ancient time, when it was just the begining of Dwapar yuga there was a king named Mahijeet, of the kingdom Mahishmatipur, he did not have a son, he used to be very sad al the time because of this.once he became very tensed and told his subjects..."hey my people I have not done any huge big sin in this life of mine, there is no unjust money in my treassure.I have never took away money deserved by the brahmins and deities,I have taken care of my kingdom as my own child.

I have conquered the world, but only with Dharma.I have punished the wicked even if they were my own relatives, I have always respected the civilized people and never envied anyone
then what do you think could be the reason that I still do not have a son.?"

hearing these words of their king, subjects along with the brahmins, and all the well wishers of the king started roaming about in the Ashrams in the woods,
then all of a sudden Sage Lomash appeared.
Lomashji is an incredible sage, his body is full of Lom or fur, he is as great as Brahmaji himself.He is so long lived that after every kalpa(period) is fur
gets destroyed n detached from his body, thats why he is known as sage Lomash, this maharishi knows things of present,past and future.
peaple became so happy seeing him.Lomashji said to them, "what are you people gathered here for, are you in trouble, I will surely help you out if I can."
people said..."Hey great sage, king Mahijeet is our king, he has taken care of us as his own children, though he does not have a heir, he is very sad,
we have came here in the jungle to do tapasya as we cannot see our king sad . hey sage, we are
very fortunate that we have had the oppurtunity to see you, now we are content tht our wish will come true as
only by seeing the great saints problems of men are solved. please tell us some solution to our problem.
Hearing the words of the people sage Lomash meditated for a short while and told the story of the previous birth of their king mahijeet. he said"king mahijeet was a crooked ,
poor vaishya(a caste of the businessmen),he used to do business roaming here and there among the villages.one day on the shukla fortnite of the month of jayeshtha,
while it was a very hot summer afternoon, he came near a pond in some village. and he thought of drinking the wated.suddenly one cow along with her calf came there near the pond too.
she was very thirsty too, so she started drinking the water too. but vaishya while he saw that the cow is also drinking the water, he put the cow away and started drinking the water alone, and
because of this sin, king is issueless in this birth of his.But as he did so may good karmas in some other previous birth, he is the king now."

people said "hey sage it is said that bad karmas can be washed away with the good karmas,penance.
please advice some good karma so tht his wrong karmas can be washed off."
Sage Lomash said "the ekadashi on the shuklapaksh of shraavan month, is known as "Putradaa"[son giving] ekadashi, you people keep that fast."
hearing this the people came back to the city and ket the fast of Putradaa ekaadashi in the righteous way, and even stayed awake for the whole night,
and sacrified or gave away their punyaas{good karma of keeping the fast} to the king.Later the quenn concieved and gave birth to a strong baby boy.
people who listen to the glory of this great ekadashi their sins are washed off and attain heaven after this life.


पुत्रदा एकादशी

युधिष्ठिर ने पूछा : मधुसूदन ! श्रावण के शुक्लपक्ष में किस नाम की एकादशी होती है ? कृपया मेरे सामने उसका वर्णन कीजिये ।

भगवान श्रीकृष्ण बोले : राजन् ! प्राचीन काल की बात है । द्वापर युग के प्रारम्भ का समय था । माहिष्मतीपुर में राजा महीजित अपने राज्य का पालन करते थे किन्तु उन्हें कोई पुत्र नहीं था, इसलिए वह राज्य उन्हें सुखदायक नहीं प्रतीत होता था । अपनी अवस्था अधिक देख राजा को बड़ी चिन्ता हुई । उन्होंने प्रजावर्ग में बैठकर इस प्रकार कहा: ‘प्रजाजनो ! इस जन्म में मुझसे कोई पातक नहीं हुआ है । मैंने अपने खजाने में अन्याय से कमाया हुआ धन नहीं जमा किया है । ब्राह्मणों और देवताओं का धन भी मैंने कभी नहीं लिया है । पुत्रवत् प्रजा का पालन किया है । धर्म से पृथ्वी पर अधिकार जमाया है । दुष्टों को, चाहे वे बन्धु और पुत्रों के समान ही क्यों न रहे हों, दण्ड दिया है । शिष्ट पुरुषों का सदा सम्मान किया है और किसीको द्वेष का पात्र नहीं समझा है । फिर क्या कारण है, जो मेरे घर में आज तक पुत्र उत्पन्न नहीं हुआ? आप लोग इसका विचार करें ।’

राजा के ये वचन सुनकर प्रजा और पुरोहितों के साथ ब्राह्मणों ने उनके हित का विचार करके गहन वन में प्रवेश किया । राजा का कल्याण चाहनेवाले वे सभी लोग इधर उधर घूमकर ॠषिसेवित आश्रमों की तलाश करने लगे । इतने में उन्हें मुनिश्रेष्ठ लोमशजी के दर्शन हुए ।

लोमशजी धर्म के त्तत्त्वज्ञ, सम्पूर्ण शास्त्रों के विशिष्ट विद्वान, दीर्घायु और महात्मा हैं । उनका शरीर लोम से भरा हुआ है । वे ब्रह्माजी के समान तेजस्वी हैं । एक एक कल्प बीतने पर उनके शरीर का एक एक लोम विशीर्ण होता है, टूटकर गिरता है, इसीलिए उनका नाम लोमश हुआ है । वे महामुनि तीनों कालों की बातें जानते हैं ।

उन्हें देखकर सब लोगों को बड़ा हर्ष हुआ । लोगों को अपने निकट आया देख लोमशजी ने पूछा : ‘तुम सब लोग किसलिए यहाँ आये हो? अपने आगमन का कारण बताओ । तुम लोगों के लिए जो हितकर कार्य होगा, उसे मैं अवश्य करुँगा ।’

प्रजाजनों ने कहा : ब्रह्मन् ! इस समय महीजित नामवाले जो राजा हैं, उन्हें कोई पुत्र नहीं है । हम लोग उन्हींकी प्रजा हैं, जिनका उन्होंने पुत्र की भाँति पालन किया है । उन्हें पुत्रहीन देख, उनके दु:ख से दु:खित हो हम तपस्या करने का दृढ़ निश्चय करके यहाँ आये है । द्विजोत्तम ! राजा के भाग्य से इस समय हमें आपका दर्शन मिल गया है । महापुरुषों के दर्शन से ही मनुष्यों के सब कार्य सिद्ध हो जाते हैं । मुने ! अब हमें उस उपाय का उपदेश कीजिये, जिससे राजा को पुत्र की प्राप्ति हो ।

उनकी बात सुनकर महर्षि लोमश दो घड़ी के लिए ध्यानमग्न हो गये । तत्पश्चात् राजा के प्राचीन जन्म का वृत्तान्त जानकर उन्होंने कहा : ‘प्रजावृन्द ! सुनो । राजा महीजित पूर्वजन्म में मनुष्यों को चूसनेवाला धनहीन वैश्य था । वह वैश्य गाँव-गाँव घूमकर व्यापार किया करता था । एक दिन ज्येष्ठ के शुक्लपक्ष में दशमी तिथि को, जब दोपहर का सूर्य तप रहा था, वह किसी गाँव की सीमा में एक जलाशय पर पहुँचा । पानी से भरी हुई बावली देखकर वैश्य ने वहाँ जल पीने का विचार किया । इतने में वहाँ अपने बछड़े के साथ एक गौ भी आ पहुँची । वह प्यास से व्याकुल और ताप से पीड़ित थी, अत: बावली में जाकर जल पीने लगी । वैश्य ने पानी पीती हुई गाय को हाँककर दूर हटा दिया और स्वयं पानी पीने लगा । उसी पापकर्म के कारण राजा इस समय पुत्रहीन हुए हैं । किसी जन्म के पुण्य से इन्हें निष्कण्टक राज्य की प्राप्ति हुई है ।’

प्रजाजनों ने कहा : मुने ! पुराणों में उल्लेख है कि प्रायश्चितरुप पुण्य से पाप नष्ट होते हैं, अत: ऐसे पुण्यकर्म का उपदेश कीजिये, जिससे उस पाप का नाश हो जाय ।

लोमशजी बोले : प्रजाजनो ! श्रावण मास के शुक्लपक्ष में जो एकादशी होती है, वह ‘पुत्रदा’ के नाम से विख्यात है । वह मनोवांछित फल प्रदान करनेवाली है । तुम लोग उसीका व्रत करो ।

यह सुनकर प्रजाजनों ने मुनि को नमस्कार किया और नगर में आकर विधिपूर्वक ‘पुत्रदा एकादशी’ के व्रत का अनुष्ठान किया । उन्होंने विधिपूर्वक जागरण भी किया और उसका निर्मल पुण्य राजा को अर्पण कर दिया । तत्पश्चात् रानी ने गर्भधारण किया और प्रसव का समय आने पर बलवान पुत्र को जन्म दिया ।

इसका माहात्म्य सुनकर मनुष्य पापों से मुक्त हो जाता है तथा इहलोक में सुख पाकर परलोक में स्वर्गीय गति को प्राप्त होता है

is its name, what is its process and which deity is worshipped in it?"
Lord Visnu's Footprint

Lord Shrikrishna said :"Hey king the Ekadashi of Paush Shukla Paksh, is Putradaa Ekadashi."

" On the day of Putradaa Ekadashi, one should worship Lord ShriHari chanting the holy mantras, along with coconuts, betalnut, pomegranate, beautiful Amla, cloves, bijora and jamira lemon, bers, and especially with the mango fruit and lamp and incense.On the Safala Ekadashi, it is a special provision of doing charity of the lamps.During the night one must stay awake and do jagran with the Vaishnava devotees.The effect of doing the jaagran is much more than doing meditation for thousands of years."It is a holy date , it destroys all the sins."

In the whole world there is no ther date as Ekadashi.The granter of all the wishes, Lord Naarayan is its God.

In ancient times there was a king named Suketumaan of Bhadraavatipuri.His queen named Champaa.King did not have a haeir for a long time.

Hence the couple was very sad all the time. Pitars{ancestors } used to drink water offered by him sadly{as there was nobody after him to offer them again later.}

"After the king, we cannot see any who will satiate us"thinking this ancestors used to be very sad.

One day king went to deep jungle on the horseback.Even the priest etc. did not know about this.In that jungle filled with deers and birds king started roaming . 

On the way he could hear jackal somewhere, and an owl somewhere.He could see the beers and deears here and there.Hence the king was wandering and enjoying the beauty of the forest and it was noontime now.King felt thirsty and hungry now.He started roaming here and there in the search of water now.With the efect of some good karma of the past he sae a great pond, which was surrounded by hermitages of hermits.Beautiful king saw those hermitages.

He felt good omen.He could feel some movement in his right eye and right hand, which gave him the indication of something good that will happen.On the shore of the pond ,sages were chanting the Vedas.Seeing them the king was pleased.He descended from the horseback and started greeting the sages one by one.Those sages were the keepers of great fasts, traditions,seeing the king kowtowing them on the ground to greet them, they were all pleased and spoke ;"Hey King, we are pleased by you."

king spoke :"Who are you people?What are your names? why have you all gathered here ? please tell me."

Sages spoke :"Hey king we are Vishvedevas .We have came here to take a bath .The month of Maagha is approaching.On the fifth day from today, the festival of taking holy bath on the month of maagh will start.It is Putradaa Ekadashi today, which provides sons to those who keep this fast."

King said :"Hey Vishvedevaas, please bless me a son if you are pleased by me."

Sages said :"Hey king it is putradaa Ekadashi today, do keep its fast.
With Lord KEshava's grace you will certainly have a son."

Lord ShriKrishna said :"Yudhthir, hence the king kept the fast as adviced by the sages.As suggested by those great saints, he did the anushthaana of the fast.

On the dwaadashi, he ended his fast and greeted the sages and came back.Later the quenn concieved.The pious king got a great son , whom with his great qualities satiated the king.He took care of the subjects very well."

" Hence King, one should keep this fast of Putradaa Ekadashi.I have elaborated its glory in the interest of the people.

Those who keep this fast with concentration, they attain a son in this world and attain heaven after this life.By reading this glory of Putradaa Ekaadashi, one attains the effect of doing Agnishtoma yagna."

पुत्रदा/वैकुण्ठ एकादशी



युधिष्ठिर बोले: श्रीकृष्ण ! कृपा करके पौष मास के शुक्लपक्ष की एकादशी का माहात्म्य बतलाइये । उसका नाम क्या है? उसे करने की विधि क्या है ? उसमें किस देवता का पूजन किया जाता है ?

भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने कहा: राजन्! पौष मास के शुक्लपक्ष की जो एकादशी है, उसका नाम ‘पुत्रदा’ है ।

‘पुत्रदा एकादशी’ को नाम-मंत्रों का उच्चारण करके फलों के द्वारा श्रीहरि का पूजन करे । नारियल के फल, सुपारी, बिजौरा नींबू, जमीरा नींबू, अनार, सुन्दर आँवला, लौंग, बेर तथा विशेषत: आम के फलों से देवदेवेश्वर श्रीहरि की पूजा करनी चाहिए । इसी प्रकार धूप दीप से भी भगवान की अर्चना करे ।

‘पुत्रदा एकादशी’ को विशेष रुप से दीप दान करने का विधान है । रात को वैष्णव पुरुषों के साथ जागरण करना चाहिए । जागरण करनेवाले को जिस फल की प्राप्ति होति है, वह हजारों वर्ष तक तपस्या करने से भी नहीं मिलता । यह सब पापों को हरनेवाली उत्तम तिथि है ।

चराचर जगतसहित समस्त त्रिलोकी में इससे बढ़कर दूसरी कोई तिथि नहीं है । समस्त कामनाओं तथा सिद्धियों के दाता भगवान नारायण इस तिथि के अधिदेवता हैं ।

पूर्वकाल की बात है, भद्रावतीपुरी में राजा सुकेतुमान राज्य करते थे । उनकी रानी का नाम चम्पा था । राजा को बहुत समय तक कोई वंशधर पुत्र नहीं प्राप्त हुआ । इसलिए दोनों पति पत्नी सदा चिन्ता और शोक में डूबे रहते थे । राजा के पितर उनके दिये हुए जल को शोकोच्छ्वास से गरम करके पीते थे । ‘राजा के बाद और कोई ऐसा नहीं दिखायी देता, जो हम लोगों का तर्पण करेगा …’ यह सोच सोचकर पितर दु:खी रहते थे ।

एक दिन राजा घोड़े पर सवार हो गहन वन में चले गये । पुरोहित आदि किसीको भी इस बात का पता न था । मृग और पक्षियों से सेवित उस सघन कानन में राजा भ्रमण करने लगे । मार्ग में कहीं सियार की बोली सुनायी पड़ती थी तो कहीं उल्लुओं की । जहाँ तहाँ भालू और मृग दृष्टिगोचर हो रहे थे । इस प्रकार घूम घूमकर राजा वन की शोभा देख रहे थे, इतने में दोपहर हो गयी । राजा को भूख और प्यास सताने लगी । वे जल की खोज में इधर उधर भटकने लगे । किसी पुण्य के प्रभाव से उन्हें एक उत्तम सरोवर दिखायी दिया, जिसके समीप मुनियों के बहुत से आश्रम थे । शोभाशाली नरेश ने उन आश्रमों की ओर देखा । उस समय शुभ की सूचना देनेवाले शकुन होने लगे । राजा का दाहिना नेत्र और दाहिना हाथ फड़कने लगा, जो उत्तम फल की सूचना दे रहा था । सरोवर के तट पर बहुत से मुनि वेदपाठ कर रहे थे । उन्हें देखकर राजा को बड़ा हर्ष हुआ । वे घोड़े से उतरकर मुनियों के सामने खड़े हो गये और पृथक् पृथक् उन सबकी वन्दना करने लगे । वे मुनि उत्तम व्रत का पालन करनेवाले थे । जब राजा ने हाथ जोड़कर बारंबार दण्डवत् किया, तब मुनि बोले : ‘राजन् ! हम लोग तुम पर प्रसन्न हैं।’

राजा बोले: आप लोग कौन हैं ? आपके नाम क्या हैं तथा आप लोग किसलिए यहाँ एकत्रित हुए हैं? कृपया यह सब बताइये ।

मुनि बोले: राजन् ! हम लोग विश्वेदेव हैं । यहाँ स्नान के लिए आये हैं । माघ मास निकट आया है । आज से पाँचवें दिन माघ का स्नान आरम्भ हो जायेगा । आज ही ‘पुत्रदा’ नाम की एकादशी है,जो व्रत करनेवाले मनुष्यों को पुत्र देती है ।

राजा ने कहा: विश्वेदेवगण ! यदि आप लोग प्रसन्न हैं तो मुझे पुत्र दीजिये।

मुनि बोले: राजन्! आज ‘पुत्रदा’ नाम की एकादशी है। इसका व्रत बहुत विख्यात है। तुम आज इस उत्तम व्रत का पालन करो । महाराज! भगवान केशव के प्रसाद से तुम्हें पुत्र अवश्य प्राप्त होगा ।

भगवान श्रीकृष्ण कहते हैं: युधिष्ठिर ! इस प्रकार उन मुनियों के कहने से राजा ने उक्त उत्तम व्रत का पालन किया । महर्षियों के उपदेश के अनुसार विधिपूर्वक ‘पुत्रदा एकादशी’ का अनुष्ठान किया । फिर द्वादशी को पारण करके मुनियों के चरणों में बारंबार मस्तक झुकाकर राजा अपने घर आये । तदनन्तर रानी ने गर्भधारण किया । प्रसवकाल आने पर पुण्यकर्मा राजा को तेजस्वी पुत्र प्राप्त हुआ, जिसने अपने गुणों से पिता को संतुष्ट कर दिया । वह प्रजा का पालक हुआ ।

इसलिए राजन्! ‘पुत्रदा’ का उत्तम व्रत अवश्य करना चाहिए । मैंने लोगों के हित के लिए तुम्हारे सामने इसका वर्णन किया है । जो मनुष्य एकाग्रचित्त होकर ‘पुत्रदा एकादशी’ का व्रत करते हैं, वे इस लोक में पुत्र पाकर मृत्यु के पश्चात् स्वर्गगामी होते हैं। इस माहात्म्य को पढ़ने और सुनने से अग्निष्टोम यज्ञ का फल मिलता है ।

Yudhishthir asked :Master, which is the Ekadashi of Paush Krishna Paksh, what is its name?What is the process of its fast, which deity is worshiped in it? please elaborate."

Lord ShriKrishna spoke :"Hey king of kings, I am not satiated with huge yagnas with great dakshinas,but with the keeping of Ekadashi fast.

Paush Krishna Paksh Ekadashi is named as Safala Ekadashi.On this day Lord Narayan should be worshiped.As Sheshanaaga among the serpants, and Garuda among the birds, and God ShriVishnu among all the deities is greater, likewise, Ekadashi is greatest among all the dates."

"Hey great king, now do listen to the story related to the fortunate Safala Ekadashi.There is a famous city named Champaavati, which was once the capital of the king Mahishamat.The saintly king had 5 sons . The eldest one was always indulged in the sins.

He used to visit prostitutes and have illicit love affairs.He spent his father's money in the wrong deeds.He was always indulged in bad things and used to
criticize the Vaishnavas and the deities.Seeing his son indulged in the sins, the king named his son "Lumbhak".Later his father and his brothers threw him out of the city.
Lumbak went to the deep forest.But from there only he looted the money of the whole city.Once when he came to the city for stealing in the night time, he was caught by the policemen caught him.But when he told them that he is the son of the king Mahishmat they released him.
Afterwords he came back to the jungle and started living there ,eating meat and fruits .The shelter of that wicked
was an old Pipala tree.In that jungle, that tree was considered to be a great deity.Villian Lumbak used to live under it.

One day because of some good karma of the past, he accidently kept the fast of Ekadashi.In the month of Paush on the day of dashmi,
he ate the fruits of the trees and as he was without any clothes, he suffered the whole night because of the cold.At that time he could not
sleep at all and could not have rest too.He was becoming without life,sterile.Even in the sunrise he could not become conscious.On the day of Safla
Ekadashi too, he layed unconscious.In the noon time he woke up.He saw here and there and went inside the jungle halting like a lame man.He was weakened
and was suffering from hunger.When he came back with plenty of fruits , it was the time of sunset.Later he kept those fruits under the root of the
tree and requested :"With these fruits Lord Lakshamipati, Bhagvan Vishnu be satiated.", hence saying that he did not sleep for the whole night.
Hence this way, he accidently kept the fast of Ekadashi.Suddenly voice from the heaven spoke :" Hey prince, with the effect of Safla Ekadashi, you will
attain kingdom and son{heir}.'Very good" lumbak said and accepted the blessing.Afterwords he attained a angelic, divine form.His intellect became interested in
Lord Vishnu.He decorated with divine ornaments, attained a great kingdom and ruled it for 15 years.He had a son too, named Manogya.When Manogya became grownup
Lumbak, gave away his kingdom to him and himself went near to Lord Krishna, where no body becomes a victim of sorrow ever."

"Hence king, one who keeps this fast of Safala Ekadashi, he is liberated after attaining pleasures of this world.Those people in the world are great who keep
themselves involved in this fast of Ekadashi, their life is blessed.Hey king, one who hears, reads this glory of Ekadashi, he attains the effect of doing the Raajsuya yagna."











सफला एकादशी

युधिष्ठिर ने पूछा : स्वामिन् ! पौष मास के कृष्णपक्ष (गुज., महा. के लिए मार्गशीर्ष) में जो एकादशी होती है, उसका क्या नाम है? उसकी क्या विधि है तथा उसमें किस देवता की पूजा की जाती है ? यह बताइये ।

भगवान श्रीकृष्ण कहते हैं : राजेन्द्र ! बड़ी बड़ी दक्षिणावाले यज्ञों से भी मुझे उतना संतोष नहीं होता, जितना एकादशी व्रत के अनुष्ठान से होता है । पौष मास के कृष्णपक्ष में ‘सफला’ नाम की एकादशी होती है । उस दिन विधिपूर्वक भगवान नारायण की पूजा करनी चाहिए । जैसे नागों में शेषनाग, पक्षियों में गरुड़ तथा देवताओं में श्रीविष्णु श्रेष्ठ हैं, उसी प्रकार सम्पूर्ण व्रतों में एकादशी तिथि श्रेष्ठ है ।

राजन् ! ‘सफला एकादशी’ को नाम मंत्रों का उच्चारण करके नारियल के फल, सुपारी, बिजौरा तथा जमीरा नींबू, अनार, सुन्दर आँवला, लौंग, बेर तथा विशेषत: आम के फलों और धूप दीप से श्रीहरि का पूजन करे । ‘सफला एकादशी’ को विशेष रुप से दीप दान करने का विधान है । रात को वैष्णव पुरुषों के साथ जागरण करना चाहिए । जागरण करनेवाले को जिस फल की प्राप्ति होती है, वह हजारों वर्ष तपस्या करने से भी नहीं मिलता ।

नृपश्रेष्ठ ! अब ‘सफला एकादशी’ की शुभकारिणी कथा सुनो । चम्पावती नाम से विख्यात एक पुरी है, जो कभी राजा माहिष्मत की राजधानी थी । राजर्षि माहिष्मत के पाँच पुत्र थे । उनमें जो ज्येष्ठ था, वह सदा पापकर्म में ही लगा रहता था । परस्त्रीगामी और वेश्यासक्त था । उसने पिता के धन को पापकर्म में ही खर्च किया । वह सदा दुराचारपरायण तथा वैष्णवों और देवताओं की निन्दा किया करता था । अपने पुत्र को ऐसा पापाचारी देखकर राजा माहिष्मत ने राजकुमारों में उसका नाम लुम्भक रख दिया। फिर पिता और भाईयों ने मिलकर उसे राज्य से बाहर निकाल दिया । लुम्भक गहन वन में चला गया । वहीं रहकर उसने प्राय: समूचे नगर का धन लूट लिया । एक दिन जब वह रात में चोरी करने के लिए नगर में आया तो सिपाहियों ने उसे पकड़ लिया । किन्तु जब उसने अपने को राजा माहिष्मत का पुत्र बतलाया तो सिपाहियों ने उसे छोड़ दिया । फिर वह वन में लौट आया और मांस तथा वृक्षों के फल खाकर जीवन निर्वाह करने लगा । उस दुष्ट का विश्राम स्थान पीपल वृक्ष बहुत वर्षों पुराना था । उस वन में वह वृक्ष एक महान देवता माना जाता था । पापबुद्धि लुम्भक वहीं निवास करता था ।

एक दिन किसी संचित पुण्य के प्रभाव से उसके द्वारा एकादशी के व्रत का पालन हो गया । पौष मास में कृष्णपक्ष की दशमी के दिन पापिष्ठ लुम्भक ने वृक्षों के फल खाये और वस्त्रहीन होने के कारण रातभर जाड़े का कष्ट भोगा । उस समय न तो उसे नींद आयी और न आराम ही मिला । वह निष्प्राण सा हो रहा था । सूर्योदय होने पर भी उसको होश नहीं आया । ‘सफला एकादशी’ के दिन भी लुम्भक बेहोश पड़ा रहा । दोपहर होने पर उसे चेतना प्राप्त हुई । फिर इधर उधर दृष्टि डालकर वह आसन से उठा और लँगड़े की भाँति लड़खड़ाता हुआ वन के भीतर गया । वह भूख से दुर्बल और पीड़ित हो रहा था । राजन् ! लुम्भक बहुत से फल लेकर जब तक विश्राम स्थल पर लौटा, तब तक सूर्यदेव अस्त हो गये । तब उसने उस पीपल वृक्ष की जड़ में बहुत से फल निवेदन करते हुए कहा: ‘इन फलों से लक्ष्मीपति भगवान विष्णु संतुष्ट हों ।’ यों कहकर लुम्भक ने रातभर नींद नहीं ली । इस प्रकार अनायास ही उसने इस व्रत का पालन कर लिया । उस समय सहसा आकाशवाणी हुई: ‘राजकुमार ! तुम ‘सफला एकादशी’ के प्रसाद से राज्य और पुत्र प्राप्त करोगे ।’ ‘बहुत अच्छा’ कहकर उसने वह वरदान स्वीकार किया । इसके बाद उसका रुप दिव्य हो गया । तबसे उसकी उत्तम बुद्धि भगवान विष्णु के भजन में लग गयी । दिव्य आभूषणों से सुशोभित होकर उसने निष्कण्टक राज्य प्राप्त किया और पंद्रह वर्षों तक वह उसका संचालन करता रहा । उसको मनोज्ञ नामक पुत्र उत्पन्न हुआ । जब वह बड़ा हुआ, तब लुम्भक ने तुरंत ही राज्य की ममता छोड़कर उसे पुत्र को सौंप दिया और वह स्वयं भगवान श्रीकृष्ण के समीप चला गया, जहाँ जाकर मनुष्य कभी शोक में नहीं पड़ता ।

राजन् ! इस प्रकार जो ‘सफला एकादशी’ का उत्तम व्रत करता है, वह इस लोक में सुख भोगकर मरने के पश्चात् मोक्ष को प्राप्त होता है । संसार में वे मनुष्य धन्य हैं, जो ‘सफला एकादशी’ के व्रत में लगे रहते हैं, उन्हीं का जन्म सफल है । महाराज! इसकी महिमा को पढ़ने, सुनने तथा उसके अनुसार आचरण करने से मनुष्य राजसूय यज्ञ का फल पाता है

The fast of Utpatti Ekadashi must be done in the Hemant season, in the margshirsha krishna paksh.
The story related to it is as below ... :

Yudhishthir asked to Lord Krishna, :"Bhagwan,how did this pious date of Ekadashi began? Why is it considered holy in the world and why is it dear to the dieties?"

Sribhagwan spoke :"Hey kuntinandana{son of kunti}, in ancient times, there lived a demon, named Mur, who
lived in the Satyug.He was incredibly amazing,frightening, scary for the dieties.That huge, deadly demon even conquered Indra,
All the dieties were conquered by him and were banished from heaven and used to roam on the earth, scared and suspicious.

One day they went to Mahadevji{Lord Shiva}.Here Indra narrated the whole story in front of the Lord Shiv."

Indra said :"Hey God of Gods, deities are roaming about on the earth after being banished from the heaven.

They Do not look good with humans.Hey God, please give us some advice,where should we take refuge ?
Mahadevji said :"Hey king of deiteis, Lord Garudadhavaj who gives shelter to everyone, who rescues everyone, go to him, he will save you."

Lord ShriKrishna said :"hEY ydhishthir, listening to the advice of Mahadeva, wise Indra, along with all the
deities went to Ksheersaagar, where Lord Gadaadhara was sleeping.Here Indra started praising the lord with folded hands."

Indra spoke :"Hey God of Gods, Namaskar to you.You are only husband{master}, you are intellect, you are the creator and reason.
you are the father and mother of all the creatures.Dieties and demons, both praise you.O Pundarikaksha, you are the enemy of the demons.
Hey Madhusudan, please save us.O Prabhu, hey Jagannaatha, a strong wild demon, Mur has won the heaven and banshed us deities from heaven.
O bhagwan, O God of Gods, Sharaagatvatsala, we have came into your shelter frightened by the demon.O destroyer of the demons, Hey Kamalanayan,
Bhaktavatsal, God of Gods,Janaardan! Save us..save us.Bhagvan save us dieties we are in your shelter."



Hearing the pleas of Indra Lord Vishnu spoke :"Hey king of deities ,how does this demon look like?What king of form he has,
how much power does he have? and where does this wicked villian live ?"

Indra spoke :"Hey God of Gods ,in ancient times, in the dynasty of Brahmaji, there appeared a huge demon Taaljangha , who was very
appalling.His son is known as Mur demon.He also has temendous power and is frightening for the dieties.He lives in a city named Chandraavati.
That demon has conquered the dieties and has banished them from heaven.He has made a yet another Indra to sit on the throne of paradise.He has created
his own deities of, Sun, Agni{fire},Varun{water},air .Hey Janaardana, I am telling you the truth, he has created his own people.Dieties have been
banished from everywhere."

Listening to the speech of Indra,Lord Janaardana, became very angry.He entered the city of Chandraavati along with the dieties.Lord Janaardana saw
that "the demon was roaring again and again and the deities are running away in all the 10 directions conquered by him."
Seeing Lord Vishnu , the demon spoke, "Stay where you are........stay right there."Hearing this the eyes of the Lord turned red with anger.Lord
said :"Hey wicked demon, just see my arms."Now Lord Vishnu started killing the demons with his divine arrows, the demons who were approaching him.
The demons were frightened.Hey son of Pandu, later Shrihari blew his chakra on the army of the demons.Now thousands of demons shattered away and died."

"Hence, Lord Madhusudan went to Badrika Aashram.Here there was a cave named Simhaavati, which was 12 yojan{Indian standard to meassure distances} long.
Hey Pandunandana, there was only one door in that cave.Lord Vishnu slept in that cave.That wicked demon was following the Lord in order to kill him, hence he
also entered the cave.Here, seeing the Lord asleep, he became very happy.He thought :"This is a God which has frightened the demons, I will certainly kill him."
Hey Yudhishthir, as the demon thought this, there appeared a girl from the body of Lord Vishnu, who was very beautiful,fortunate and decorated with divine weapons.
She appeared from the brightness of Lord Vishnu.She had a great strength.Yudhishthir, the demon saw the girl.The asked him to fight with her.Now the battle began.
The girl was very accomplished in the art of war.The great demon shattered only with her whooper.When he dies, Lord awakened.Seeing the demon dead on the ground
Lord asked the girl,"This enemy of mine was very powerful, Who has killed him?"

Girl spoke :"Master, with your grace, I have killed this great demon."

ShriBhagwan spoke :"Hey Kalyaani, with this karma of yours, you have pleassured, the sages and dieties of the three worlds.Hence ask for anything you wish for from me.
Even if it is hard to attain by the dieties, I will provide it to you, no doubt about it."

That girl was Ekadashi herself.

She spoke :"Prabho..! If you are happy then, with your grace I want to be predominent among all the pilgrimages,the destroyer of all the obstacles,
and a provider of all the siddhis.Hey Janaardan, those who will kep faith in you and will keep a fast on my date, let them attain whatever they wish for.
Hey Maadhav, those who will keep a fast, with one meal a day or no meal a day, do provide them with money, dharma and liberaton."

Shri Vishnu spoke :"Hey Kalyani, whatever you have spoken, will be that way."

Lord Shrikrishna says :"Yudhthir, hearing this, Mahavrataa Ekadashi was pleased so much.The ekadashis of both the fortnights do the equal welfare.
One should not differenciate between shukla and krishna paksha.If in the begining there is a little Ekadashi, in the middle Dwadashi,and in the end, there is
a little Trayodashi, it is then known as Trisprisha Ekadashi.It is very dear to the Lord.If one keeps a fast of Trisprisha ekadashi, then he attains the effect of k
keeping 1000 ekadashis and like wise the paaran in the dwaadashi is considered as 1000 times more.Ashtami{8th date}, Ekadashi{11th},shashthi{6th}, chaturthi{4th}
and tritiya{3rd}, -all these if they are having an inflence of the previous tithi{dates}, then one should not keep the fast .One should keep the fast only in the parvartini date.
During the previous date, if there is ekadashi during the day and nught both,and there is ekadashi on the morning of the next date,
then one must keep the fast the secong day, including the dwadashi date.This is the process I have told for both the Ekadashis of the month."

" One who keeps the fast of Ekadashi, attains Vaikuntha, where Lord Garudadwaja is himself.A person who keeps on reciting the glory of Ekadashi,he gets the effect of doing charity of
1000 cows.Those who listen to this glory of Ekadashi during the night or day, they get rid of the sins like brahmahatya{killing the brahmins}.
There is no other fast as Ekadashi in this world."







उत्पत्ति एकादशी
उत्पत्ति एकादशी का व्रत हेमन्त ॠतु में मार्गशीर्ष मास के कृष्णपक्ष ( गुजरात महाराष्ट्र के अनुसार कार्तिक ) को करना चाहिए । इसकी कथा इस प्रकार है :

युधिष्ठिर ने भगवान श्रीकृष्ण से पूछा : भगवन् ! पुण्यमयी एकादशी तिथि कैसे उत्पन्न हुई? इस संसार में वह क्यों पवित्र मानी गयी तथा देवताओं को कैसे प्रिय हुई?

श्रीभगवान बोले : कुन्तीनन्दन ! प्राचीन समय की बात है । सत्ययुग में मुर नामक दानव रहता था । वह बड़ा ही अदभुत, अत्यन्त रौद्र तथा सम्पूर्ण देवताओं के लिए भयंकर था । उस कालरुपधारी दुरात्मा महासुर ने इन्द्र को भी जीत लिया था । सम्पूर्ण देवता उससे परास्त होकर स्वर्ग से निकाले जा चुके थे और शंकित तथा भयभीत होकर पृथ्वी पर विचरा करते थे । एक दिन सब देवता महादेवजी के पास गये । वहाँ इन्द्र ने भगवान शिव के आगे सारा हाल कह सुनाया ।

इन्द्र बोले : महेश्वर ! ये देवता स्वर्गलोक से निकाले जाने के बाद पृथ्वी पर विचर रहे हैं । मनुष्यों के बीच रहना इन्हें शोभा नहीं देता । देव ! कोई उपाय बतलाइये । देवता किसका सहारा लें ?
महादेवजी ने कहा : देवराज ! जहाँ सबको शरण देनेवाले, सबकी रक्षा में तत्पर रहने वाले जगत के स्वामी भगवान गरुड़ध्वज विराजमान हैं, वहाँ जाओ । वे तुम लोगों की रक्षा करेंगे ।

भगवान श्रीकृष्ण कहते हैं : युधिष्ठिर ! महादेवजी की यह बात सुनकर परम बुद्धिमान देवराज इन्द्र सम्पूर्ण देवताओं के साथ क्षीरसागर में गये जहाँ भगवान गदाधर सो रहे थे । इन्द्र ने हाथ जोड़कर उनकी स्तुति की ।

इन्द्र बोले : देवदेवेश्वर ! आपको नमस्कार है ! देव ! आप ही पति, आप ही मति, आप ही कर्त्ता और आप ही कारण हैं । आप ही सब लोगों की माता और आप ही इस जगत के पिता हैं । देवता और दानव दोनों ही आपकी वन्दना करते हैं । पुण्डरीकाक्ष ! आप दैत्यों के शत्रु हैं । मधुसूदन ! हम लोगों की रक्षा कीजिये । प्रभो ! जगन्नाथ ! अत्यन्त उग्र स्वभाववाले महाबली मुर नामक दैत्य ने इन सम्पूर्ण देवताओं को जीतकर स्वर्ग से बाहर निकाल दिया है । भगवन् ! देवदेवेश्वर ! शरणागतवत्सल ! देवता भयभीत होकर आपकी शरण में आये हैं । दानवों का विनाश करनेवाले कमलनयन ! भक्तवत्सल ! देवदेवेश्वर ! जनार्दन ! हमारी रक्षा कीजिये… रक्षा कीजिये । भगवन् ! शरण में आये हुए देवताओं की सहायता कीजिये ।

इन्द्र की बात सुनकर भगवान विष्णु बोले : देवराज ! यह दानव कैसा है ? उसका रुप और बल कैसा है तथा उस दुष्ट के रहने का स्थान कहाँ है ?

इन्द्र बोले: देवेश्वर ! पूर्वकाल में ब्रह्माजी के वंश में तालजंघ नामक एक महान असुर उत्पन्न हुआ था, जो अत्यन्त भयंकर था । उसका पुत्र मुर दानव के नाम से विख्यात है । वह भी अत्यन्त उत्कट, महापराक्रमी और देवताओं के लिए भयंकर है । चन्द्रावती नाम से प्रसिद्ध एक नगरी है, उसीमें स्थान बनाकर वह निवास करता है । उस दैत्य ने समस्त देवताओं को परास्त करके उन्हें स्वर्गलोक से बाहर कर दिया है । उसने एक दूसरे ही इन्द्र को स्वर्ग के सिंहासन पर बैठाया है । अग्नि, चन्द्रमा, सूर्य, वायु तथा वरुण भी उसने दूसरे ही बनाये हैं । जनार्दन ! मैं सच्ची बात बता रहा हूँ । उसने सब कोई दूसरे ही कर लिये हैं । देवताओं को तो उसने उनके प्रत्येक स्थान से वंचित कर दिया है ।

इन्द्र की यह बात सुनकर भगवान जनार्दन को बड़ा क्रोध आया । उन्होंने देवताओं को साथ लेकर चन्द्रावती नगरी में प्रवेश किया । भगवान गदाधर ने देखा कि “दैत्यराज बारंबार गर्जना कर रहा है और उससे परास्त होकर सम्पूर्ण देवता दसों दिशाओं में भाग रहे हैं ।’ अब वह दानव भगवान विष्णु को देखकर बोला : ‘खड़ा रह … खड़ा रह ।’ उसकी यह ललकार सुनकर भगवान के नेत्र क्रोध से लाल हो गये । वे बोले : ‘ अरे दुराचारी दानव ! मेरी इन भुजाओं को देख ।’ यह कहकर श्रीविष्णु ने अपने दिव्य बाणों से सामने आये हुए दुष्ट दानवों को मारना आरम्भ किया । दानव भय से विह्लल हो उठे । पाण्ड्डनन्दन ! तत्पश्चात् श्रीविष्णु ने दैत्य सेना पर चक्र का प्रहार किया । उससे छिन्न भिन्न होकर सैकड़ो योद्धा मौत के मुख में चले गये ।

इसके बाद भगवान मधुसूदन बदरिकाश्रम को चले गये । वहाँ सिंहावती नाम की गुफा थी, जो बारह योजन लम्बी थी । पाण्ड्डनन्दन ! उस गुफा में एक ही दरवाजा था । भगवान विष्णु उसीमें सो गये । वह दानव मुर भगवान को मार डालने के उद्योग में उनके पीछे पीछे तो लगा ही था । अत: उसने भी उसी गुफा में प्रवेश किया । वहाँ भगवान को सोते देख उसे बड़ा हर्ष हुआ । उसने सोचा : ‘यह दानवों को भय देनेवाला देवता है । अत: नि:सन्देह इसे मार डालूँगा ।’ युधिष्ठिर ! दानव के इस प्रकार विचार करते ही भगवान विष्णु के शरीर से एक कन्या प्रकट हुई, जो बड़ी ही रुपवती, सौभाग्यशालिनी तथा दिव्य अस्त्र शस्त्रों से सुसज्जित थी । वह भगवान के तेज के अंश से उत्पन्न हुई थी । उसका बल और पराक्रम महान था । युधिष्ठिर ! दानवराज मुर ने उस कन्या को देखा । कन्या ने युद्ध का विचार करके दानव के साथ युद्ध के लिए याचना की । युद्ध छिड़ गया । कन्या सब प्रकार की युद्धकला में निपुण थी । वह मुर नामक महान असुर उसके हुंकारमात्र से राख का ढेर हो गया । दानव के मारे जाने पर भगवान जाग उठे । उन्होंने दानव को धरती पर इस प्रकार निष्प्राण पड़ा देखकर कन्या से पूछा : ‘मेरा यह शत्रु अत्यन्त उग्र और भयंकर था । किसने इसका वध किया है ?’

कन्या बोली: स्वामिन् ! आपके ही प्रसाद से मैंने इस महादैत्य का वध किया है।

श्रीभगवान ने कहा : कल्याणी ! तुम्हारे इस कर्म से तीनों लोकों के मुनि और देवता आनन्दित हुए हैं। अत: तुम्हारे मन में जैसी इच्छा हो, उसके अनुसार मुझसे कोई वर माँग लो । देवदुर्लभ होने पर भी वह वर मैं तुम्हें दूँगा, इसमें तनिक भी संदेह नहीं है ।

वह कन्या साक्षात् एकादशी ही थी।

उसने कहा: ‘प्रभो ! यदि आप प्रसन्न हैं तो मैं आपकी कृपा से सब तीर्थों में प्रधान, समस्त विघ्नों का नाश करनेवाली तथा सब प्रकार की सिद्धि देनेवाली देवी होऊँ । जनार्दन ! जो लोग आपमें भक्ति रखते हुए मेरे दिन को उपवास करेंगे, उन्हें सब प्रकार की सिद्धि प्राप्त हो । माधव ! जो लोग उपवास, नक्त भोजन अथवा एकभुक्त करके मेरे व्रत का पालन करें, उन्हें आप धन, धर्म और मोक्ष प्रदान कीजिये ।’

श्रीविष्णु बोले: कल्याणी ! तुम जो कुछ कहती हो, वह सब पूर्ण होगा ।

भगवान श्रीकृष्ण कहते हैं : युधिष्ठिर ! ऐसा वर पाकर महाव्रता एकादशी बहुत प्रसन्न हुई । दोनों पक्षों की एकादशी समान रुप से कल्याण करनेवाली है । इसमें शुक्ल और कृष्ण का भेद नहीं करना चाहिए । यदि उदयकाल में थोड़ी सी एकादशी, मध्य में पूरी द्वादशी और अन्त में किंचित् त्रयोदशी हो तो वह ‘त्रिस्पृशा एकादशी’ कहलाती है । वह भगवान को बहुत ही प्रिय है । यदि एक ‘त्रिस्पृशा एकादशी’ को उपवास कर लिया जाय तो एक हजार एकादशी व्रतों का फल प्राप्त होता है तथा इसी प्रकार द्वादशी में पारण करने पर हजार गुना फल माना गया है । अष्टमी, एकादशी, षष्ठी, तृतीय और चतुर्दशी - ये यदि पूर्वतिथि से विद्ध हों तो उनमें व्रत नहीं करना चाहिए । परवर्तिनी तिथि से युक्त होने पर ही इनमें उपवास का विधान है । पहले दिन में और रात में भी एकादशी हो तथा दूसरे दिन केवल प्रात: काल एकदण्ड एकादशी रहे तो पहली तिथि का परित्याग करके दूसरे दिन की द्वादशीयुक्त एकादशी को ही उपवास करना चाहिए । यह विधि मैंने दोनों पक्षों की एकादशी के लिए बतायी है ।

जो मनुष्य एकादशी को उपवास करता है, वह वैकुण्ठधाम में जाता है, जहाँ साक्षात् भगवान गरुड़ध्वज विराजमान रहते हैं । जो मानव हर समय एकादशी के माहात्मय का पाठ करता है, उसे हजार गौदान के पुण्य का फल प्राप्त होता है । जो दिन या रात में भक्तिपूर्वक इस माहात्म्य का श्रवण करते हैं, वे नि:संदेह ब्रह्महत्या आदि पापों से मुक्त हो जाते हैं । एकादशी के समान पापनाशक व्रत दूसरा कोई नहीं है ।

Lord Shri Krishna said :"Hey Arjun, now I will tell you a story related to the liberating Ekadashi of Kartik Shukla pash named "Prabodhini Ekadashi",

which is a dialogue between Brahmaji and Naradji.Once Naaradji asked to Brahmaji :"Hey father, what is the effect of keeping the fast of Prabodhini Ekadashi? please let me know."

Brahmaji spoke :"Hey son, a thing which is very difficult to attain can be attained by Prabodhini Ekadashi's fast. By keeping this fast so many wrong karmas done in the
previous births are destroyed within seconds.

Hey son, those who do even very little good karma during this day, even those are converted into big mountains.Who keeps this fast, his ancestors attain Vaikuntha.The crime of killing the Brahmins is also destroyed by keeping this fast and staying awake during the night.

"Hey Naarad, humans must keep this fast for pleasing Lord Vishnu.Aperson who keeps the fast of Ekadashi,he becomes prosperous,Yogi, ascetic, master of his senses as Ekadashi is very dear to Lord Vishnu."

" During this day a person who does to please the Lord charity, meditation,yagna{chanting the holy names is also a yagna......as I am the japa yagna amongst all the yagnas...SrimadbhagwadGita}They attain a good karma that can not be destroyed."

"Hence Naarad, you must also worship Lod Vishnu in the right way.On this Ekadashi, one must wake up in the time of Brahma muhurat{early morning before sunrise}
and should pledge for the fast and worship the Lord.In the night time one should stay awake and spend the night singing, doing kirtan,dancing nearby the Lord."

"On the day of Prabodhini Ekadashi, Lord should be worshiped with incense,flowers etc, and should give Arghaya to the Lord.The effect of this is billion times more than
doing charity and pilgrimages."

"Those who with the rose flowers, Bakul and Ashok flowers, Kaner flowers red and white,Duurvadal, Champak flowers, Shami leaves worship Lord, they are liberated from this world.
Hence one should worship the lord during the night and in the morning time after having a bath,one should pray to the lord and worship his Guruji and offer food to the pious Brahmins and
hence end his fast this way"

"Those who pledge for leaving or sacrificing some particular thing during these 4 months, they must start doing the same right from this day.Those who keep this fast with the
right process, they attain unlimited pleassures and attain heaven after their lives."




प्रबोधिनी एकादशी

भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने कहा : हे अर्जुन ! मैं तुम्हें मुक्ति देनेवाली कार्तिक मास के शुक्लपक्ष की ‘प्रबोधिनी एकादशी’ के सम्बन्ध में नारद और ब्रह्माजी के बीच हुए वार्तालाप को सुनाता हूँ । एक बार नारादजी ने ब्रह्माजी से पूछा : ‘हे पिता ! ‘प्रबोधिनी एकादशी’ के व्रत का क्या फल होता है, आप कृपा करके मुझे यह सब विस्तारपूर्वक बतायें ।’

ब्रह्माजी बोले : हे पुत्र ! जिस वस्तु का त्रिलोक में मिलना दुष्कर है, वह वस्तु भी कार्तिक मास के शुक्लपक्ष की ‘प्रबोधिनी एकादशी’ के व्रत से मिल जाती है । इस व्रत के प्रभाव से पूर्व जन्म के किये हुए अनेक बुरे कर्म क्षणभर में नष्ट हो जाते है । हे पुत्र ! जो मनुष्य श्रद्धापूर्वक इस दिन थोड़ा भी पुण्य करते हैं, उनका वह पुण्य पर्वत के समान अटल हो जाता है । उनके पितृ विष्णुलोक में जाते हैं । ब्रह्महत्या आदि महान पाप भी ‘प्रबोधिनी एकादशी’ के दिन रात्रि को जागरण करने से नष्ट हो जाते हैं ।

हे नारद ! मनुष्य को भगवान की प्रसन्नता के लिए कार्तिक मास की इस एकादशी का व्रत अवश्य करना चाहिए । जो मनुष्य इस एकादशी व्रत को करता है, वह धनवान, योगी, तपस्वी तथा इन्द्रियों को जीतनेवाला होता है, क्योंकि एकादशी भगवान विष्णु को अत्यंत प्रिय है ।

इस एकादशी के दिन जो मनुष्य भगवान की प्राप्ति के लिए दान, तप, होम, यज्ञ (भगवान्नामजप भी परम यज्ञ है। ‘यज्ञानां जपयज्ञोऽस्मि’ । यज्ञों में जपयज्ञ मेरा ही स्वरुप है।’ - श्रीमद्भगवदगीता ) आदि करते हैं, उन्हें अक्षय पुण्य मिलता है ।

इसलिए हे नारद ! तुमको भी विधिपूर्वक विष्णु भगवान की पूजा करनी चाहिए । इस एकादशी के दिन मनुष्य को ब्रह्ममुहूर्त में उठकर व्रत का संकल्प लेना चाहिए और पूजा करनी चाहिए । रात्रि को भगवान के समीप गीत, नृत्य, कथा-कीर्तन करते हुए रात्रि व्यतीत करनी चाहिए ।

‘प्रबोधिनी एकादशी’ के दिन पुष्प, अगर, धूप आदि से भगवान की आराधना करनी चाहिए, भगवान को अर्ध्य देना चाहिए । इसका फल तीर्थ और दान आदि से करोड़ गुना अधिक होता है ।

जो गुलाब के पुष्प से, बकुल और अशोक के फूलों से, सफेद और लाल कनेर के फूलों से, दूर्वादल से, शमीपत्र से, चम्पकपुष्प से भगवान विष्णु की पूजा करते हैं, वे आवागमन के चक्र से छूट जाते हैं । इस प्रकार रात्रि में भगवान की पूजा करके प्रात:काल स्नान के पश्चात् भगवान की प्रार्थना करते हुए गुरु की पूजा करनी चाहिए और सदाचारी व पवित्र ब्राह्मणों को दक्षिणा देकर अपने व्रत को छोड़ना चाहिए ।

जो मनुष्य चातुर्मास्य व्रत में किसी वस्तु को त्याग देते हैं, उन्हें इस दिन से पुनः ग्रहण करनी चाहिए । जो मनुष्य ‘प्रबोधिनी एकादशी’ के दिन विधिपूर्वक व्रत करते हैं, उन्हें अनन्त सुख मिलता है और अंत में स्वर्ग को जाते हैं

Yudhishthir asked :"Hey Janaardan, you really love me, hence please tell me about the Ekadashi of Kartik Krishna Paksh,"

Lord Krishna said :"Hey king, Kartik Krishna Paksh Ekadashi is known as Ramaa Ekadashi, it is very great and a destroyer of the
horrible sins."

"In ancient times there was a king named Muchukanda, who was very famous, loved Lord Vishnu and always spoke the truth."
He had a daughter named Chandrabhaagaa .King married her to Chandrasen kumar Shoban.Once Shoban came to his father-in-law's house and that day
thee was this announcement that:"Nobody will eat on Ekadashi."Hearing this Shoban asked his wife :"Dear,what should I do now, please guide me."

Chandrabhaagaa spoke: Dear, in my father's house not only humans but even the pets do not eat anything on Ekadashi.If you eat on this day, you
will be criticized, hence please do make your heart strong and do not eat please."

Shoban said :"Dear, you are right, I will keep this fast too."

Lord Shri Krishna said : "Hence this way , Shoban kept this fast but before sunrise, he died.He was provided with the kingly cremation by the king.
Now Chandrabhaagaa started living with her father ."


" There Shoban after that life attained Devapur, and started living at the top of the Mandaraanchal mountains as a second Kuber. Once a famous brahmin from
king Muchukand 's kingdom named Somnaath Sharma went on a pilgrimage on the Madraanchal mountains where he saw Shodhan.He recognised him as son-in-law of his king and hence
went near to him.King Shobhan too seeing a great Brahmin approaching towards him stood up and greeted him.Hence asked about his father-in-law, wife and the whole city."

Somnaath Sharma said :" Hey great king everything is fine there.It is amazing, this is an incredible city, nobody must have seen this kind of city before. Please tell me
how did you get/achieve this city?"

Shobhan spoke : "Hey Brahmin, I had kept the fast of Ramaa Ekadashi of kartik krishna paksh, thats why I attained this city.Thought I did not have any faith on the fast thats why
this city is not stable.Please tell this story to Muchukand king's beautiful daughter , Chandrabhaagaa."

Hearing that story , the Brahmin went to the kingdom of Muchukundupur and told the whole story to Chandrabhaagaa.

Somsharma said :"I saw your husband there,I saw his heavenly city too.But his city is unstable, you make it stable."

Chandrabhaagaa said :"Brahmarishi, I want to see my husband .please take me there. With the effect of my fast I will make that city stable."

Lord Krishna said :"Hearing Chandrabhaagaa, Somnaath Sharma took her to near the top of Mandranchal mountain , in an Aashram of Vaamdev Sage.Here with the power of the
heavenly mantra of that sage and keeping the fast of Ekadashi, her body became angelic, heavenly.Hence she went to her husband.Shobhan became so happy seeing his dear wife approaching towards him.
He made her sit besides him on a throne on his left side.Now Chandrabhaagaa spoke these sweet words :"Hey master , listen, I have kept the fast of Ekadashi right from when I was 8 years old,with whose
effect this city will remain stable and prosperous for a long period."


"Hence Hey king,with the effect of the fast of Ekadashi, Chandrabhaaga, has attained divine pleassures, divine form,divine ornaments,and she along with her husband roams on the mountains of Mandaraanchal.
Heuy king I have told you the glory of Ramaa Ekadashi.It fulfills the wishes just like Chintamani{a gem with whose effect whateven one thinks of , he gets it} and Kamdhenu{a cow, which provides its bearer whatever he asks for}.




रमा एकादशी

युधिष्ठिर ने पूछा : जनार्दन ! मुझ पर आपका स्नेह है, अत: कृपा करके बताइये कि कार्तिक के कृष्णपक्ष में कौन सी एकादशी होती है ?

भगवान श्रीकृष्ण बोले : राजन् ! कार्तिक (गुजरात महाराष्ट्र के अनुसार आश्विन) के कृष्णपक्ष में ‘रमा’ नाम की विख्यात और परम कल्याणमयी एकादशी होती है । यह परम उत्तम है और बड़े-बड़े पापों को हरनेवाली है ।

पूर्वकाल में मुचुकुन्द नाम से विख्यात एक राजा हो चुके हैं, जो भगवान श्रीविष्णु के भक्त और सत्यप्रतिज्ञ थे । अपने राज्य पर निष्कण्टक शासन करनेवाले उन राजा के यहाँ नदियों में श्रेष्ठ ‘चन्द्रभागा’ कन्या के रुप में उत्पन्न हुई । राजा ने चन्द्रसेनकुमार शोभन के साथ उसका विवाह कर दिया । एक बार शोभन दशमी के दिन अपने ससुर के घर आये और उसी दिन समूचे नगर में पूर्ववत् ढिंढ़ोरा पिटवाया गया कि: ‘एकादशी के दिन कोई भी भोजन न करे ।’ इसे सुनकर शोभन ने अपनी प्यारी पत्नी चन्द्रभागा से कहा : ‘प्रिये ! अब मुझे इस समय क्या करना चाहिए, इसकी शिक्षा दो ।’

चन्द्रभागा बोली : प्रभो ! मेरे पिता के घर पर एकादशी के दिन मनुष्य तो क्या कोई पालतू पशु आदि भी भोजन नहीं कर सकते । प्राणनाथ ! यदि आप भोजन करेंगे तो आपकी बड़ी निन्दा होगी । इस प्रकार मन में विचार करके अपने चित्त को दृढ़ कीजिये ।

शोभन ने कहा : प्रिये ! तुम्हारा कहना सत्य है । मैं भी उपवास करुँगा । दैव का जैसा विधान है, वैसा ही होगा ।

भगवान श्रीकृष्ण कहते हैं : इस प्रकार दृढ़ निश्चय करके शोभन ने व्रत के नियम का पालन किया किन्तु सूर्योदय होते होते उनका प्राणान्त हो गया । राजा मुचुकुन्द ने शोभन का राजोचित दाह संस्कार कराया । चन्द्रभागा भी पति का पारलौकिक कर्म करके पिता के ही घर पर रहने लगी ।

नृपश्रेष्ठ ! उधर शोभन इस व्रत के प्रभाव से मन्दराचल के शिखर पर बसे हुए परम रमणीय देवपुर को प्राप्त हुए । वहाँ शोभन द्वितीय कुबेर की भाँति शोभा पाने लगे । एक बार राजा मुचुकुन्द के नगरवासी विख्यात ब्राह्मण सोमशर्मा तीर्थयात्रा के प्रसंग से घूमते हुए मन्दराचल पर्वत पर गये, जहाँ उन्हें शोभन दिखायी दिये । राजा के दामाद को पहचानकर वे उनके समीप गये । शोभन भी उस समय द्विजश्रेष्ठ सोमशर्मा को आया हुआ देखकर शीघ्र ही आसन से उठ खड़े हुए और उन्हें प्रणाम किया । फिर क्रमश : अपने ससुर राजा मुचुकुन्द, प्रिय पत्नी चन्द्रभागा तथा समस्त नगर का कुशलक्षेम पूछा ।

सोमशर्मा ने कहा : राजन् ! वहाँ सब कुशल हैं । आश्चर्य है ! ऐसा सुन्दर और विचित्र नगर तो कहीं किसीने भी नहीं देखा होगा । बताओ तो सही, आपको इस नगर की प्राप्ति कैसे हुई?

शोभन बोले : द्विजेन्द्र ! कार्तिक के कृष्णपक्ष में जो ‘रमा’ नाम की एकादशी होती है, उसीका व्रत करने से मुझे ऐसे नगर की प्राप्ति हुई है । ब्रह्मन् ! मैंने श्रद्धाहीन होकर इस उत्तम व्रत का अनुष्ठान किया था, इसलिए मैं ऐसा मानता हूँ कि यह नगर स्थायी नहीं है । आप मुचुकुन्द की सुन्दरी कन्या चन्द्रभागा से यह सारा वृत्तान्त कहियेगा ।

शोभन की बात सुनकर ब्राह्मण मुचुकुन्दपुर में गये और वहाँ चन्द्रभागा के सामने उन्होंने सारा वृत्तान्त कह सुनाया ।

सोमशर्मा बोले : शुभे ! मैंने तुम्हारे पति को प्रत्यक्ष देखा । इन्द्रपुरी के समान उनके दुर्द्धर्ष नगर का भी अवलोकन किया, किन्तु वह नगर अस्थिर है । तुम उसको स्थिर बनाओ ।

चन्द्रभागा ने कहा : ब्रह्मर्षे ! मेरे मन में पति के दर्शन की लालसा लगी हुई है । आप मुझे वहाँ ले चलिये । मैं अपने व्रत के पुण्य से उस नगर को स्थिर बनाऊँगी ।

भगवान श्रीकृष्ण कहते हैं : राजन् ! चन्द्रभागा की बात सुनकर सोमशर्मा उसे साथ ले मन्दराचल पर्वत के निकट वामदेव मुनि के आश्रम पर गये । वहाँ ॠषि के मंत्र की शक्ति तथा एकादशी सेवन के प्रभाव से चन्द्रभागा का शरीर दिव्य हो गया तथा उसने दिव्य गति प्राप्त कर ली । इसके बाद वह पति के समीप गयी । अपनी प्रिय पत्नी को आया हुआ देखकर शोभन को बड़ी प्रसन्नता हुई । उन्होंने उसे बुलाकर अपने वाम भाग में सिंहासन पर बैठाया । तदनन्तर चन्द्रभागा ने अपने प्रियतम से यह प्रिय वचन कहा: ‘नाथ ! मैं हित की बात कहती हूँ, सुनिये । जब मैं आठ वर्ष से अधिक उम्र की हो गयी, तबसे लेकर आज तक मेरे द्वारा किये हुए एकादशी व्रत से जो पुण्य संचित हुआ है, उसके प्रभाव से यह नगर कल्प के अन्त तक स्थिर रहेगा तथा सब प्रकार के मनोवांछित वैभव से समृद्धिशाली रहेगा ।’

नृपश्रेष्ठ ! इस प्रकार ‘रमा’ व्रत के प्रभाव से चन्द्रभागा दिव्य भोग, दिव्य रुप और दिव्य आभरणों से विभूषित हो अपने पति के साथ मन्दराचल के शिखर पर विहार करती है । राजन् ! मैंने तुम्हारे समक्ष ‘रमा’ नामक एकादशी का वर्णन किया है । यह चिन्तामणि तथा कामधेनु के समान सब मनोरथों को पूर्ण करनेवाली है

धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर कहने लगे कि हे भगवान! कार्तिक कृष्ण एकादशी का क्या नाम है? इसकी विधि क्या है? इसके करने से क्या फल मिलता है। सो आप विस्तारपूर्वक बताइए। भगवान श्रीकृष्ण बोले कि कार्तिक कृष्ण पक्ष की एकादशी का नाम रमा है। यह बड़े-बड़े पापों का नाश करने वाली है। इसका माहात्म्य मैं तुमसे कहता हूँ, ध्यानपूर्वक सुनो।



हे राजन! प्राचीनकाल में मुचुकुंद नाम का एक राजा था। उसकी इंद्र के साथ मित्रता थी और साथ ही यम, कुबेर, वरुण और विभीषण भी उसके मित्र थे। यह राजा बड़ा धर्मात्मा, विष्णुभक्त और न्याय के साथ राज करता था। उस राजा की एक कन्या थी, जिसका नाम चंद्रभागा था। उस कन्या का विवाह चंद्रसेन के पुत्र शोभन के साथ हुआ था। एक समय वह शोभन ससुराल आया। उन्हीं दिनों जल्दी ही पुण्यदायिनी एकादशी (रमा) भी आने वाली थी।

जब व्रत का दिन समीप आ गया तो चंद्रभागा के मन में अत्यंत सोच उत्पन्न हुआ कि मेरे पति अत्यंत दुर्बल हैं और मेरे पिता की आज्ञा अति कठोर है। दशमी को राजा ने ढोल बजवाकर सारे राज्य में यह घोषणा करवा दी कि एकादशी को भोजन नहीं करना चाहिए। ढोल की घोषणा सुनते ही शोभन को अत्यंत चिंता हुई औ अपनी पत्नी से कहा कि हे प्रिये! अब क्या करना चाहिए, मैं किसी प्रकार भी भूख सहन नहीं कर सकूँगा। ऐसा उपाय बतलाओ कि जिससे मेरे प्राण बच सकें, अन्यथा मेरे प्राण अवश्य चले जाएँगे।

चंद्रभागा कहने लगी कि हे स्वामी! मेरे पिता के राज में एकादशी के दिन कोई भी भोजन नहीं करता। हाथी, घोड़ा, ऊँट, बिल्ली, गौ आदि भी तृण, अन्न, जल आदि ग्रहण नहीं कर सकते, फिर मनुष्य का तो कहना ही क्या है। यदि आप भोजन करना चाहते हैं तो किसी दूसरे स्थान पर चले जाइए, क्योंकि यदि आप यहीं रहना चाहते हैं तो आपको अवश्य व्रत करना पड़ेगा। ऐसा सुनकर शोभन कहने लगा कि हे प्रिये! मैं अवश्य व्रत करूँगा, जो भाग्य में होगा, वह देखा जाएगा।

इस प्रकार से विचार कर शोभन ने व्रत रख लिया और वह भूख व प्यास से अत्यंत पीडि़त होने लगा। जब सूर्य नारायण अस्त हो गए और रात्रि को जागरण का समय आया जो वैष्णवों को अत्यंत हर्ष देने वाला था, परंतु शोभन के लिए अत्यंत दु:खदायी हुआ। प्रात:काल होते शोभन के प्राण निकल गए। तब राजा ने सुगंधित काष्ठ से उसका दाह संस्कार करवाया। परंतु चंद्रभागा ने अपने पिता की आज्ञा से अपने शरीर को दग्ध नहीं किया और शोभन की अंत्येष्टि क्रिया के बाद अपने पिता के घर में ही रहने लगी।

रमा एकादशी के प्रभाव से शोभन को मंदराचल पर्वत पर धन-धान्य से युक्त तथा शत्रुओं से रहित एक सुंदर देवपुर प्राप्त हुआ। वह अत्यंत सुंदर रत्न और वैदुर्यमणि जटित स्वर्ण के खंभों पर निर्मित अनेक प्रकार की स्फटिक मणियों से सुशोभित भवन में बहुमूल्य वस्त्राभूषणों तथा छत्र व चँवर से विभूषित, गंधर्व और अप्सराअओं से युक्त सिंहासन पर आरूढ़ ऐसा शोभायमान होता था मानो दूसरा इंद्र विराजमान हो।

एक समय मुचुकुंद नगर में रहने वाले एक सोम शर्मा नामक ब्राह्मण तीर्थयात्रा करता हुआ घूमता-घूमता उधर जा निकला और उसने शोभन को पहचान कर कि यह तो राजा का जमाई शोभन है, उसके निकट गया। शोभन भी उसे पहचान कर अपने आसन से उठकर उसके पास आया और प्रणामादि करके कुशल प्रश्न किया। ब्राह्मण ने कहा कि राजा मुचुकुंद और आपकी पत्नी कुशल से हैं। नगर में भी सब प्रकार से कुशल हैं, परंतु हे राजन! हमें आश्चर्य हो रहा है। आप अपना वृत्तांत कहिए कि ऐसा सुंदर नगर जो न कभी देखा, न सुना, आपको कैसे प्राप्त हुआ।

तब शोभन बोला कि कार्तिक कृष्ण की रमा एकादशी का व्रत करने से मुझे यह नगर प्राप्त हुआ, परंतु यह अस्थिर है। यह स्थिर हो जाए ऐसा उपाय कीजिए। ब्राह्मण कहने लगा कि हे राजन! यह स्थिर क्यों नहीं है और कैसे स्थिर हो सकता है आप बताइए, फिर मैं अवश्यमेव वह उपाय करूँगा। मेरी इस बात को आप मिथ्या न समझिए। शोभन ने कहा कि मैंने इस व्रत को श्रद्धारहित होकर किया है। अत: यह सब कुछ अस्थिर है। यदि आप मुचुकुंद की कन्या चंद्रभागा को यह सब वृत्तांत कहें तो यह स्थिर हो सकता है।

ऐसा सुनकर उस श्रेष्ठ ब्राह्मण ने अपने नगर लौटकर चंद्रभागा से सब वृत्तांत कह सुनाया। ब्राह्मण के वचन सुनकर चंद्रभागा बड़ी प्रसन्नता से ब्राह्मण से कहने लगी कि हे ब्राह्मण! ये सब बातें आपने प्रत्यक्ष देखी हैं या स्वप्न की बातें कर रहे हैं। ब्राह्मण कहने लगा कि हे पुत्री! मैंने महावन में तुम्हारे पति को प्रत्यक्ष देखा है। साथ ही किसी से विजय न हो ऐसा देवताओं के नगर के समान उनका नगर भी देखा है। उन्होंने यह भी कहा कि यह स्थिर नहीं है। जिस प्रकार वह स्थिर रह सके सो उपाय करना चाहिए।

चंद्रभागा कहने लगी हे विप्र! तुम मुझे वहाँ ले चलो, मुझे पतिदेव के दर्शन की तीव्र लालसा है। मैं अपने किए हुए पुण्य से उस नगर को स्थिर बना दूँगी। आप ऐसा कार्य कीजिए जिससे उनका हमारा संयोग हो क्योंकि वियोगी को मिला देना महान पु्ण्य है। सोम शर्मा यह बात सुनकर चंद्रभागा को लेकर मंदराचल पर्वत के समीप वामदेव ऋषि के आश्रम पर गया। वामदेवजी ने सारी बात सुनकर वेद मंत्रों के उच्चारण से चंद्रभागा का अभिषेक कर दिया। तब ऋषि के मंत्र के प्रभाव और एकादशी के व्रत से चंद्रभागा का शरीर दिव्य हो गया और वह दिव्य गति को प्राप्त हुई।

इसके बाद बड़ी प्रसन्नता के साथ अपने पति के निकट गई। अपनी प्रिय पत्नी को आते देखकर शोभन अति प्रसन्न हुआ। और उसे बुलाकर अपनी बाईं तरफ बिठा लिया। चंद्रभागा कहने लगी कि हे प्राणनाथ! आप मेरे पुण्य को ग्रहण कीजिए। अपने पिता के घर जब मैं आठ वर्ष की थी तब से विधिपूर्वक एकादशी के व्रत को श्रद्धापूर्वक करती आ रही हूँ। इस पुण्य के प्रताप से आपका यह नगर स्थिर हो जाएगा तथा समस्त कर्मों से युक्त होकर प्रलय के अंत तक रहेगा। इस प्रकार चंद्रभागा ने दिव्य आभू‍षणों और वस्त्रों से सुसज्जित होकर अपने पति के साथ आनंदपूर्वक रहने लगी।

हे राजन! यह मैंने रमा एकादशी का माहात्म्य कहा है, जो मनुष्य इस व्रत को करते हैं, उनके ब्रह्महत्यादि समस्त पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं। कृष्ण पक्ष और शुक्ल पक्ष दोनों की एका‍दशियाँ समान हैं, इनमें कोई भेदभाव नहीं है। दोनों समान फल देती हैं। जो मनुष्य इस माहात्म्य को पढ़ते अथवा सुनते हैं, वे समस्त पापों से छूटकर विष्णुलोक को प्राप्त होता हैं। इति शुभम्।
