Chandra was handsome and proud! He became fascinated by Rohini nakshatra or constellation . he wanted to marry her. hence he approaches her father -Daksha for her hand. After His first daughter Sati had defied him and married Mahadeva, Daksha had become very strict with his daughters! 🙂
But Daksha says , he will agree on a condition that Moon has to marry all his 27 daughters including Rohini and the second condition is that he should give all of them his love and attention.
Chandra agreed... anything to marry Rohini!! 😁
But He still spent more time with Rohini.
having failed to keep his promise, chandra gets cursed. Imagine how all astronomical calculations will go awry, if Moon spends his time only in one nakshatra....
the other daughters or constellations complain to dad.
Dad daksha gets angry.
he gives him warnings. When warnings are not heeded to , daksha curses him to become weak and become frail- ksheena. Imagine the handsome chandra looking dull and thin.
Now the daughters felt very guilty seeing their husband in this state!
they tried to redress the situation. They went to dad begging him to reverse the curse. No , the strict dad said...,not possible.
they directed Chandra to pray to mahadeva , who was more powerful .
hence the prayer and tapas by chandra to mahadeva!!
Shiva said, ...alright, you will wax for 15 days and wane for 15 days... a kind of negotiation!!
now, translate the story into an astronomical phenomena and mathematical calculation.
Somnath, in Gujarath is the place is where Chandra prayed to mahadeva... and got his curse removed. Chandra requested Shiva to stay there permanantly and bless people who come there... hence somnath is a Jyotirlinga...and the first of the 12!!
