Yudhishthir asked : "Hey Madhusudan, please tell me which is the ekadashi of Ashwin Krishna Paksh?"

Lord Krishna said:"Hey king the ekadashi of Ashwin Krishna Paksh, is known as Indira Ekadashi.With its effect, huge sins are
destroyed.Even the ancestors who are now in the low births, they are delievered by this fast."

"King, in ancient times ,there was a famous prince named Indrasen, who became the king of Mahishmatipur and he took care of his people
with dharma.He was very famous."

"King Indrasen used to japa of Lord Vishnu's pious names and used to be busy in meditatation all the time.Once upon a time he was sitting in his court,and sage Naarad appeared in front of him. Seeing the great sage, king greeted sage Naarad, and made him sit on the Aasana. and said," Hey great Saint, with your grace, I am fine and with your darshan,I am honoured, so please let me know the cause of your kind visit."

"Sage Naarad said, Hey king listen, my story will surprise you.I went to yamaloka, {a world ,realm of the God of death} from Brahmaloka{a world, realm of Brahmaji, the creator}. There yamadeva{God of death} made me sit on a great
Aasana and worshiped me.There I saw your father too.He had to come there because of the sin of breaching, or breaking a fast. Hey king your father has
sent me a message for you. he said, "Son do keep the fast of Indira Ekadashi and send or dedicate that good karma to me and send me to heaven."
Hey king I have came here with this message of your father.Do keep the fast of Indira Ekadashi for your father."

"King asked" hey sage, please let me know how this fast is done, when does it come, on which fortnight and on what date, please let me know."

Narad ji said " Hey king of kings ,listen,let me tell you the process of this fast. On Ashwin Krishna Paksh, Dashmi, that is the 10th day,
take a bath in the early morning and have a meal in the noon time, and sleep on the earth in the night.In the early morning of Ekadashi, take a shower and
brush your teeth and recite this mantra...:


अघ स्थित्वा निराहारः सर्वभोगविवर्जितः ।
श्वो भोक्ष्ये पुण्डरीकाक्ष शरणं मे भवाच्युत ॥


Agha sthitya nirahaaraha sarvabhogavivarjitaha.
Shvo Bhokshaye pundarikaaksha sharanam mey bhavaachyuta.


" Hey kamalanayan {having eyes like lotus}, Lord Naarayan.I surrender to you, and will not have any meal today and will eat tommorow."{

"Hence in the afternoon time,do the Shraadha of your ancestors in front of Shaaligram, ang give alms to the brahmins and offer them food.
Smell the dough meant for the ancestors and offer it to the cows.Do the jaagran in the night and worship Lord Rishikesh,with incense . Then in the morning on the Dwaadashi,
again worship Lord Shri Hari and offer food to the brahmins and afterwords have a meal along with your family members, but silently,unvoiced."

"Hence keep this fast with this process, and your ancestors will attain Vaikuntha."

Lord Krishna says that "saying this sage Naarada dissapeared and king Indrasen kept this fast along ewith his queens, princes and brothers."


"Hey Kuntinandan{son of kunti}, when the fast was done, the rain of the flowers fell from the sky.Father of the king Indrasen went to Vaikuntha sitting on Garuda,
and Indrasena after ruling his kingdom througout his lifetime went to heaven afdter his life.Hence I have told you the glory of Indira Ekadashi. All sins of a person are destroyed by
by reading and hearing this holy tale."


इन्दिरा एकादशी

युधिष्ठिर ने पूछा : हे मधुसूदन ! कृपा करके मुझे यह बताइये कि आश्विन के कृष्णपक्ष में कौन सी एकादशी होती है ?

भगवान श्रीकृष्ण बोले : राजन् ! आश्विन (गुजरात महाराष्ट्र के अनुसार भाद्रपद) के कृष्णपक्ष में ‘इन्दिरा’ नाम की एकादशी होती है । उसके व्रत के प्रभाव से बड़े-बड़े पापों का नाश हो जाता है । नीच योनि में पड़े हुए पितरों को भी यह एकादशी सदगति देनेवाली है ।

राजन् ! पूर्वकाल की बात है । सत्ययुग में इन्द्रसेन नाम से विख्यात एक राजकुमार थे, जो माहिष्मतीपुरी के राजा होकर धर्मपूर्वक प्रजा का पालन करते थे । उनका यश सब ओर फैल चुका था ।

राजा इन्द्रसेन भगवान विष्णु की भक्ति में तत्पर हो गोविन्द के मोक्षदायक नामों का जप करते हुए समय व्यतीत करते थे और विधिपूर्वक अध्यात्मतत्त्व के चिन्तन में संलग्न रहते थे । एक दिन राजा राजसभा में सुखपूर्वक बैठे हुए थे, इतने में ही देवर्षि नारद आकाश से उतरकर वहाँ आ पहुँचे । उन्हें आया हुआ देख राजा हाथ जोड़कर खड़े हो गये और विधिपूर्वक पूजन करके उन्हें आसन पर बिठाया । इसके बाद वे इस प्रकार बोले: ‘मुनिश्रेष्ठ ! आपकी कृपा से मेरी सर्वथा कुशल है । आज आपके दर्शन से मेरी सम्पूर्ण यज्ञ क्रियाएँ सफल हो गयीं । देवर्षे ! अपने आगमन का कारण बताकर मुझ पर कृपा करें ।

नारदजी ने कहा : नृपश्रेष्ठ ! सुनो । मेरी बात तुम्हें आश्चर्य में डालनेवाली है । मैं ब्रह्मलोक से यमलोक में गया था । वहाँ एक श्रेष्ठ आसन पर बैठा और यमराज ने भक्तिपूर्वक मेरी पूजा की । उस समय यमराज की सभा में मैंने तुम्हारे पिता को भी देखा था । वे व्रतभंग के दोष से वहाँ आये थे । राजन् ! उन्होंने तुमसे कहने के लिए एक सन्देश दिया है, उसे सुनो । उन्होंने कहा है: ‘बेटा ! मुझे ‘इन्दिरा एकादशी’ के व्रत का पुण्य देकर स्वर्ग में भेजो ।’ उनका यह सन्देश लेकर मैं तुम्हारे पास आया हूँ । राजन् ! अपने पिता को स्वर्गलोक की प्राप्ति कराने के लिए ‘इन्दिरा एकादशी’ का व्रत करो ।

राजा ने पूछा : भगवन् ! कृपा करके ‘इन्दिरा एकादशी’ का व्रत बताइये । किस पक्ष में, किस तिथि को और किस विधि से यह व्रत करना चाहिए ।

नारदजी ने कहा : राजेन्द्र ! सुनो । मैं तुम्हें इस व्रत की शुभकारक विधि बतलाता हूँ । आश्विन मास के कृष्णपक्ष में दशमी के उत्तम दिन को श्रद्धायुक्त चित्त से प्रतःकाल स्नान करो । फिर मध्याह्नकाल में स्नान करके एकाग्रचित्त हो एक समय भोजन करो तथा रात्रि में भूमि पर सोओ । रात्रि के अन्त में निर्मल प्रभात होने पर एकादशी के दिन दातुन करके मुँह धोओ । इसके बाद भक्तिभाव से निम्नांकित मंत्र पढ़ते हुए उपवास का नियम ग्रहण करो :

अघ स्थित्वा निराहारः सर्वभोगविवर्जितः ।
श्वो भोक्ष्ये पुण्डरीकाक्ष शरणं मे भवाच्युत ॥

‘कमलनयन भगवान नारायण ! आज मैं सब भोगों से अलग हो निराहार रहकर कल भोजन करुँगा । अच्युत ! आप मुझे शरण दें |’

इस प्रकार नियम करके मध्याह्नकाल में पितरों की प्रसन्नता के लिए शालग्राम शिला के सम्मुख विधिपूर्वक श्राद्ध करो तथा दक्षिणा से ब्राह्मणों का सत्कार करके उन्हें भोजन कराओ । पितरों को दिये हुए अन्नमय पिण्ड को सूँघकर गाय को खिला दो । फिर धूप और गन्ध आदि से भगवान ह्रषिकेश का पूजन करके रात्रि में उनके समीप जागरण करो । तत्पश्चात् सवेरा होने पर द्वादशी के दिन पुनः भक्तिपूर्वक श्रीहरि की पूजा करो । उसके बाद ब्राह्मणों को भोजन कराकर भाई बन्धु, नाती और पुत्र आदि के साथ स्वयं मौन होकर भोजन करो ।

राजन् ! इस विधि से आलस्यरहित होकर यह व्रत करो । इससे तुम्हारे पितर भगवान विष्णु के वैकुण्ठधाम में चले जायेंगे ।

भगवान श्रीकृष्ण कहते हैं : राजन् ! राजा इन्द्रसेन से ऐसा कहकर देवर्षि नारद अन्तर्धान हो गये । राजा ने उनकी बतायी हुई विधि से अन्त: पुर की रानियों, पुत्रों और भृत्योंसहित उस उत्तम व्रत का अनुष्ठान किया ।

कुन्तीनन्दन ! व्रत पूर्ण होने पर आकाश से फूलों की वर्षा होने लगी । इन्द्रसेन के पिता गरुड़ पर आरुढ़ होकर श्रीविष्णुधाम को चले गये और राजर्षि इन्द्रसेन भी निष्कण्टक राज्य का उपभोग करके अपने पुत्र को राजसिंहासन पर बैठाकर स्वयं स्वर्गलोक को चले गये । इस प्रकार मैंने तुम्हारे सामने ‘इन्दिरा एकादशी’ व्रत के माहात्म्य का वर्णन किया है । इसको पढ़ने
और सुनने से मनुष्य सब पापों से मुक्त हो जाता है ।
