Train to Rameswaram

A 2.3 km train ride over the rough and raging Bay of Bengal to the Rameswaram temple island in South India. The railway bridge historically carried meter-gauge trains, but Indian Railways upgraded the bridge to carry broad-gauge trains in a project that finished Aug 12, 2007. The bridge constructed by the British over a 100 years ago and still in good condition is a marvel of engineering. Until recent times, the bridge formed Pamban island's only link with the Indian mainland. Thousands of Hindu pilgrims on pilgrimage to the holy Hindu shrine of Rameswaram traverse it everyday. The ride is fascinating, but scary when you look down at the choppy sea below, and wonder what could happen if a storm pushes the train off the bridge!
